Hybrid and EV (electric vehicles) are complex and sophisticated with many different variants on the roads since they became a viable mode of private transport.

Here are brief explanations of the different types:

• Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV): This type uses a battery to store energy and they need to be recharged regularly, like a mobile phone or other device. Zero emissions and very efficient.

• Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV): This type has a fuel tank and a battery like a BEV which can be recharged externally. The PHEV has the capability to use the fuel engine when needed, making them more versatile than a BEV. However, they do produce emissions from the fuel engine.

• Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV): Greater emissions, and less efficiency than a BEV, but fewer emissions than a traditional petrol or diesel vehicle. This type has an electric motor and a fuel engine, but its battery cannot be recharged by external means. HEVs use the fuel engine for long-distance travelling and the electric motor for short journeys, or at temporary traffic stops.
